Initially drawn for HOTSHOE Issue 186, seeking inspiration and influence from European signage, in particular that of markets from small village shops to the sprawling hyper markets of Calais, we present Marche. Our interpretation on Eurostile; in particular Bold Condensed. Presented in the ‘Super’ weight, Marche is accompanied by foreword and backward slanting siblings for use in large display settings. Supplied in OpenType (.OTF) format, containing Latin-A and Central European character sets alongside stylistic alternates and typographic controls.

Central Avenue was originally created for the graphic identity of an exhibition celebrating Birmingham’s infamous 1886 exhibition of Local Manufacturers and Natural History. The core of the identity was the bespoke typeface that we created based on the hand-painted signs from the original exhibition. The typeface style that they employed wasn’t the typical decorative Victorian face, it was a simple sans serif – much more industrial and much more relevant for a contemporary exhibition of its kind. What was essential was to not loose the essence of the original designs through digitising. We wanted to make sure that we managed to retain some of the awkwardness and personality that the hand painted letter forms had. Rather than imagining the lowercase characters, we decided to keep it ‘Victorian’ and designed a superscripted alternative that enables the user to create their own word logos.

Lisbon is a geometric stencil typeface based on an original metal stencil that Burrill found in a sign makers shop in Lisbon, Portugal. The font was first used in a series of posters commissioned by the British Council for Experimenta cultural biennale in Lisbon (2010). A lower case and punctuation has been developed from the original upper case, using the same strict geometric rules as the original.
