I find it often unnecessary to use smart objects for flat-lay scenes, also because not every version of Photoshop can read them. I try to make my products useful even for those who have older versions, by including clipping masks in PSD and clipping path in a JPEG file. If you don't have Photoshop at all, you can still use the JPEG file for your mockup work in some application that allows inserting text and graphics.
